What’s important is taking the first step in moving from aging to sage-ing.  Whether you do your eldering work alone or in socialized settings at workshops and meditation retreats, or through solo meditation and journal writing, remember that the work of integrating body, mind, and soul requires time and commitment…you can begin shaping your life into a noble masterpiece.”

 – Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi

To support you on what Reb Zalman refers to as “this pioneering journey into your unmapped potential,” whether you are young or old, Sage-ing® International offers 3 categories of educational programs, each with its own unique flavor.

The Signature Programs

serve as an excellent introduction to sage-ing’s core topics (Images of Aging, Life Review, Forgiveness, Facing Mortality, Legacy, and Service).  They provide the tools and resources needed to explore the aging years in order to navigate the second half of life with greater understanding and purpose.

The World Wisdom Programs

allow participants to explore cultural traditions and perspectives across the globe on aging and spirituality to deepen their understanding of their own aging years and to enhance their “Sage-ing tool-box.”

The Enrichment Programs

supplement and broaden SI’s range of educational opportunities by inviting guest presenters who are accomplished authors, innovators, Sage-ing® Leaders and other creative professionals, to facilitate workshops and webinars that reflect their areas of study and mastery of topics related to aging more consciously.

This month features Amikaeyla Gastan, a singer, activist, and executive director/founder of the International Cultural Arts & Healing Sciences Institute. Intimacy with All Things: Intimacy with the Ultimate Mystery

In the meeting we’ll return to Dogen Zenji’s classic teaching: Enlightenment is intimacy with all things. We will look beyond words like enlightenment, awakening, and God-realization to find the living spirit of love and wisdom that true sages embody in the world. It is this aspiration that motivates so many of us to study, practice, and serve in the ways that we do. Without being perfectionistic, we’ll celebrate the “perfect imperfection” of our humanness and intimately embrace the part of everyone that is a center of transcendent awareness.

Origins: Reb Zalman and the Beginnings of the Concious Aging Movement

Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, celebrated for his work in ecumenical dialogue and Jewish Renewal, was the chief instigator of the movement for conscious aging and was at the forefront in defining its aims and means. Building on an account of his extraordinary life, this presentation will review the concerns that led to his seminal publication, in 1995, From Age-ing to Sage-ing: A Profound New Vision of Growing Older.

Facing Our Mortality: A Year to Live (Session 1 of a year-long series)

Based on the book A Year to Live by Stephen Levine, the group will undertake a practice of living for one year as if each member was given an unspecified medical prognosis of having one year to live. The group will meet monthly to work with what emerges. There will be guided meditations at the beginning, middle, and end of the year and monthly facilitated discussions based on the content of the book and the recommended monthly practices. While reading the book is recommended, it is not required.

An Introduction to Contemplative Practices for Sages

Young people look outward and act in the world. When we become elders, and our body loses strength, we can turn our attention inward, into the spiritual realm. This is why Sage-ing is, at heart, an inner journey. As one delves into her or himself through deep awareness, s/he discovers the truth that lies beneath the surface. Then, like a deep-sea diver returning from the deep with discovered treasure, s/he can share the treasure with others. This is the true essence of a sage. In this two-hour workshop, a specific, multistep method of deepening and focusing awareness will be taught through which one can discover a deep inner silence filled with joy and illumination.

Sage-ing for Hard Times

Join us as we explore how the inner work we have done (or can still do) guides and strengthens us not just in the good times, but through the hard times as well.

Learning to Love Midlife: 12 Reasons Why Life Gets Better with Age

Raines Cohen, one of Sage-ing International’s Certified Sage-ing Leaders (CSL) will interview Chip Conley, best-selling author, with a focus on navigating transitions, cultivating purpose, owning one’s wisdom, and reframing our relationship with aging by being “age-fluid.”

From Sightseeing to Soul-seeing: Exploring the Spiritual Possibilities of Travel

For older adults, travel is often one of their greatest pleasures. But while a stay in an exclusive resort is one way to satisfy that wanderlust, author Lori Erickson argues instead for more soulful types of travel. In doing so she draws inspiration from arguably the oldest form of travel: pilgrimage. In cultures across the world and throughout history, trips to sacred sites have been a central part of the process of growing older. From Christians traveling to Rome and Muslims making the Hajj to Mecca, to Jews visiting the Western Wall in Jerusalem, these journeys can be profoundly transformative.
