During this centennial celebration year of Rabbi Zalman Schachter Shalomi, Sage-ing International is exploring the roots that have been planted by Reb Zalman. “From Age-ing to Sage-ing,” the book written by Reb Zalman with contributions from Ronald S.Miller, certainly is the taproot that has nurtured the conscious aging movement.
Join us for three in-depth book-study (explorations) sessions as we look closely at Reb Zalman’s book, “From Age-ing to Sage-ing.” The wisdom and resources contained in the book are as relevant today as they were 30 years ago, from the proposal for an alternative to senescence through the process of Sage-ing, to the practice of ending our separation from the web of life and all that is contained therein. Here is an outline of the three sessions. Each session will bring together the voices of those who have worked with Reb Zalman and can give us deeper insights into his personal journey and the practices described in the book.

Sessions and Facilitators
…with Judith Helburn – We will share how “From Age-ing to Sage-ing” came to be. We will examine where we, personally, are in our evolution toward becoming a sage. The Theory of Spiritual Eldering will cover the history of attitudes towards elders, but also why we, as sages, need to grow and pass our accumulated wisdom down to other generations. The session includes stories, poetry, questions to ponder as well as suggestions for us to continue our sage-ing journey.
Judith Helburn, Certified Sage-ing Leader (CSL), has been a Sage-ing International (SI) Training Coordinator, served on SI’s Coordinating Circle, and was the editor for the SI Communicator.
Judith currently leads a memoir writing group and has written over 100 book reviews for Amazon [under the auspices of Story Circle Network]. When Judith can, she leads at least one 8-week Sage-ing webinar series per year. She is an avid reader of both fiction and non-fiction and loves to take long walks in the nearby woods.

…with Jerome Kerner – We will examine the Sage-ing practices that form the arc from images of aging, life harvesting, forgiveness, mortality, and legacy. We will be focusing on the breakthroughs in spiritual eldering that have occurred in the last seven decades, breakthroughs in how we define ‘spiritual,’ and how this has become the new paradigm in personal growth that leads to validation, self-worth, and meaning from within.
Jerome Kerner, CSL, has received advanced certification in Gestalt psychotherapy from Southern Connecticut University and the Transgenerational Family Systems Hellinger Institute D.C. As an Octogenarian and a great-grandfather, Jerome loves sharing the purpose, passion, and meaning he has discovered through the Sage-ing world.

August 14th – Session Three
…with Raines Cohen – In our last (but not least) session, we get to explore together what it truly means to be “Aging in Community.” How can we serve as mentors, in ways that create our legacy through service?
What is our role in healing our own families, the communities we live in, and the world? How can we organize in wisdom circles and guilds and bring about the change we dream of, in ways that will survive us?

Raines Cohen, CSL, is an Aging-in-Community community-organizer, based in Berkeley, California. He works to connect people around Aging Well Together, co-creating cohousing neighborhoods, weaving connections for neighbor-support Villages, and finding greater meaning and purpose in later life.
Raines wrote the Aging-in-Community chapter in the book Audacious Aging. A Certified Sage-ing Leader, he serves on the SI Coordinating Committee, and several SI working groups. He is a founding member of the Elders’ Guild and Elders Action Network,
