Our History

20+ Years Of Experience

Sage-ing® International is a community of elders and elders-to-be who are ready to explore new ways of aging. Beginning as a networking organization for professionals, we have expanded our focus, reaching out to everyone approaching or in the second half of life. Our vision includes teaching/learning, service and community as three vitally important aspects of the sage-ing® journey.

Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, author of From Age-ing to Sage-ing®, has inspired thousands of people around the world. Sage-ing® leaders, trained to apply the ideas of this seminal book and to share these ideas with others, are working to change the way elders are perceived by others and the way older adults approach the second half of their lives.

We have grown from a seed planted by Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi in 2004 for a professional association to facilitate exchange of ideas between Sage-ing® Leaders and a structure for the training of Sage-ing® Leaders.

Frequently Ask Questions

“Sage-ing” turns aging into a verb — it is the art and process of consciously developing our wisdom, compassion, and purpose as we grow older.

The work is inspired by Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, who envisioned aging as a time for harvesting wisdom, healing relationships, and passing on blessings. His famous work is From Age-ing to Sage-ing: A Revolutionary Approach to Growing Older (written with Ronald S. Miller). This is the book that started the Sage-ing International movement.

No. We are inclusive. People from all faiths — and from secular paths — are welcome.

An Elder is not simply an older person. In the Sage-ing view, an Elder is someone who chooses to live intentionally — bringing awareness, presence, wisdom, and compassion to later life.

We focus on reflection, forgiveness, life review, legacy, and service. We see these as spiritual practices that bring meaning and wholeness to aging.

It’s our foundational workshop — a welcoming introduction to the Sage-ing process through guided reflection and conversation often referred to as “ASW.” (Note: put in a link to the next available offering of an ASW)

It is a follow-up experience that builds on the ASW, offering a deeper exploration of personal growth and service. (Note: put in a link to the next available offering of a DSW)

Our Programs & Events page lists upcoming workshops, webinars, and circles. It’s also easy to sign up for our newsletter for timely updates.

It’s a small, supportive group that meets regularly to explore Sage-ing topics. Wisdom Circles foster deep listening, reflection, and connection with their members. Some meet online with members from all over the world, and some meet in person.

You can find listings on our website or contact us for help connecting with a local or online group.

It’s a method of intentional conversation rooted in equality, respect, and presence — the foundation of our Wisdom Circle process.
