Sage-ing International members in many areas of the US and Canada have established Sage-ing Chapters to facilitate SI members getting together. Sage-ing Chapters have meetings of SI members in the area in order to network, plan activities and share their sage-ing journey. Sage-ing Chapters may also host sage-ing workshops and other special events in their communities.
The Conscious Aging Network of New Mexico is one example of an active Sage-ing Chapter. Formed about 12 years ago by conscious aging enthusiasts in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, CAN-NM became a Chapter of SI in 2013. They currently sponsor three workshops a year for the general public on Sage-ing topics, providing popular and beneficial educational outreach to the local community and producing income for the Chapter. This income goes to pay for activities like an annual retreat for members. They also are closely connected with and very supportive of three Wisdom Circles in New Mexico. These provide a wonderful experience of community for many elders in the communities they serve. Members of CAN-NM frequently serve on governmental advisory boards that deal with issues affecting the elder communities in New Mexico. They are also active in Sage-ing International nationally, serving on many committees and the Coordinating Circle.
We have recently surveyed our active Chapters and incorporated the results into a Sage-ing Chapter Guide as a tool to help others develop their own Chapter. If you are interested in learning more about Chapters or in creating a Chapter in your community, please contact Gary Carlson, who will provide you with more information.
